La place de l’Afrique du Sud dans les BRICS suscite un ensemble d’interrogations. Analysée dans une perspective macroéconomique, la faiblesse du produit intérieur brut, de la croissance et de la démographie, remettent en cause son inclusion dans ce club de grands émergents. Son invitation à rejoindre le groupe en décembre 2010 résulte avant tout d’une initiative diplomatique. Cet article analyse les stratégies diplomatiques mises en œuvre par l’Afrique du Sud pour adhérer au groupe et détaille l’instrumentalisation faite par la diplomatie sud-africaine d’un statut auto-accordé de leader africain et de pivot dans la relation Afrique-BRICS. Cette instrumentalisation, qui sert avant tout ses propres intérêts, n’est pas sans créer un ensemble d’effets pervers.

Dr. Folashade Soule-Kohndou is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of International Relations at LSE and a research associate at GEG. She obtained her doctoral thesis in politics and international relations at Sciences Po Paris / CERI in 2014. Her research investigates, among others, the role of emerging powers groupings in global governance with the IBSA and BRICS forums as case studies. Her research interests are: south-south cooperation, emerging powers and the aid architecture, club diplomacy and global governance. She has been an invited PhD researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) in Johannesburg, the Rio Branco Institute (Ministry of External Relations) in Brasilia and the Research and Information System for developing countries (RIS) in New Delhi. She also acts as a strategy consultant for international organisations and consultancy firms. Folashade teaches global politics at undergraduate level at Sciences Po Paris. She is from Bénin.
